How to meditate in the morning

It's so easy to wake up and start scrolling through your phone.

I call this 'checking in with the external before checking in with the internal'.

Scrolling through Insta, checking up on what Beyonce is wearing, where your friends went for dinner last night and whether you've got any matches on Bumble can mean you start your day anxious, or feeling emotions that might not be your own. It's hard to know where you end and others begin.

So how do you stop scrolling and start the habit of meditating each morning?

My tip is to make sure you don't bite off more than you can chew. I see it time and time again, someone wants to start meditating so they set a goal of 20-30 minutes each day. It's a mistake.

I always encourage new meditators, or people wanting to start a regular habit, to start with mindful breathing or a 5 minute meditation.

You can also try something called habit stacking, which helps you build upon existing long-term habits you already do.

"When I do [current habit], I will do [new habit].

e.g. when I make my coffee, I take my vitamins.

In the case of trying to meditate in the morning, habit stacking can look like: when I open the blinds I take 5 deep breaths.

I can't wait to hear from you when you let me know that you've continued to meditate most mornings, even if its just a minute each day!
